~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing;
they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
Kelsos Loanshark (Sharkey)
Kelsos Loanshark (Sharkey) 4/01/08 - 12/03/15
With a broken heart, I am contacting Greyhound Friends of New Jersey to inform you of Kelsos Loanshark's (Sharkey) passing at 7 1/2 years (sadly in his prime). Sharkey had suddenly displayed what I perceived to be symptoms of bloat on the evening of October 15, so I rushed him right over to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. The next day, Sharkey spent the entire day at the hospital having ultrasounds, blood tests, a couple of biopsies, and exams by several doctors. The final diagnosis was: Intra-abdominal mast cell disease - liver, spleen, lymph node involvement; unknown primary. He had a 4 inch diameter tumor in his abdomen (Cancer). It was such a shocking diagnosis, considering he had not displayed any symptoms prior to this. He had 3 weeks of Chemotherapy treatments to see if it would shrink his tumor, and perhaps extend his life 4 to 6 months. Another ultrasound showed that the Chemo Treatments hadn't worked and there was more lymph node involvement. My husband, and I decided against more chemo treatments, which were causing progressively worse side effects. Two weeks later on December 3, Sharkey crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
We were Sharkey's second adoptive family. He had been returned by his first family because they were moving out of the country and couldn't take him with them. We picked him up from his foster mother, Bonnie, on Mother's Day. She had just lost her greyhound girl, and Sharkey had helped her through her grieving. Sadly, we only had Sharkey for 1 year and 7 months, but we had grown to love him so very much.
Sharkey, fawn colored, (Big Tan Man as I would call him affectionately) was a gentle giant, weighing 86 pounds when he was healthy. He had a muscular physique, which was admired by everyone who met him. He looked robust and strong. But he also had a very soft side. He had large brown, expressive eyes, which were a window to his soul. You could always see his emotions in his eyes. He would often lean on you affectionately looking for some reassuring pets. He especially enjoyed rubs behind his ears.
There were two things Sharkey enjoyed most. He would give you passionate kisses all over your hands, when it was time to eat or play. He took great pleasure in eating his meals and would perform for his treats. (It was heartbreaking to see him turn his head away and refuse to eat the last couple of days of his life.) His favorite play activity in the backyard was catch with a squeaky Kong Ball. He also enjoyed taking walks in the neighborhood with his greyhound sister Raven. This time of year, he particularly liked to walk through each large leaf pile he found along the way.
Sharkey liked it quiet and dark when he slept. You would often see him with his front leg draped over his ear and eyes, to shut the world out. He was also very protective of his dog bed and would only let you near it for a few minutes for some pets before he would growl. When he became sick with cancer; however, he learned to trust me, and he would let me stroke him gently for long periods of time. He even allowed me to open his mouth and give him his pills (up to 17 a day). He never tried to bite me as I stuck my fingers into his mouth to push the pills down his throat.
We miss Sharkey dearly, but he was in a lot of pain in the end, and we chose to end his suffering. We wish we had had more time with him, because he brought such joy to us all. I use to sing to him a little song about greyhounds chasing rabbits hopping from cloud to cloud in the sky above, which he loved. My vision now is of Sharkey running from cloud to cloud chasing those silly rabbits over the rainbow...
Brooke
We were Brooke's second family. She came to us 6 months ago. Beautiful old lady, gentle and just the sweetest girl we've ever known. She and our hound BillyBob bonded right away. Shortly after she came, two more senior greys joined her. She was as sweet with them as she was with all of us. We fell in love with this lady and we are grateful that we were able to share our home and our hearts with her. She leaves behind two families who loved her dearly. We only wish we had more years together, but it was not to be. Rest easy, beloved princess girl.
Katie (Whytell June Q)
Katie (Whytell June Q) March 15, 2005 - October 13, 2015
My Family adopted Katie in May of 2008, she was our second greyhound adopted in 7 months. Katie was a wonderful friend to our other dog Georgia and to all who know her. Katie ran with a joyful spirit I will never forget. She leaves us with fond memories we will always cherish. Goodbye my sweet Katie.
Sambuca
Sambuca (GV Leon) 4/13/09 - 8/20/15
I have tried to write this a couple of times, but have a tough time putting into words how much Buca meant to us. He was an outstanding greyhound, never meeting a person he didn't like. Buca was quite an ambassador - people and children fell in love with him. If he saw someone, he felt it his duty to greet them and give them happiness by leaning up against them. He helped our newest grey overcome her shyness by setting the example of confidence and showing her that things just weren't that scary. Bu loved life and traveled with us, hiked with us, and greeted every experience with gusto. Even going to the vet was a fun thing for him. He left too early, though, due to complications with his heart. I guess his heart was just too full of love.
We miss you so much Buca, and all your friends are still asking for you. No one can believe you are gone. Thank you for being the best ever, you will never be forgotten.
With love always, Eileen, Tom, and Lia (greyhound)
Ava (Freeride Sharp)
Ava (Freeride Sharp) July 28, 2007 - December 2, 2012 - August 25, 2015
It is with great sadness that we had to let our little girl go. She got cancer in her left leg, and we could not stand to see her in pain or discomfort. We had her only 2 1/2 years but those were the best years as she was our first greyhound and so unforgettable. She lit up a room with her energy and was always so happy. She gave us so much joy and love, and we hope she is now smiling down on us, doing the loops she was unable to do for a while now, free of pain. We will always love you, Ava, mommy's heart dog.
