About Hokkem David

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Color: Red

Hokkem David is a very handsome boy. He is slightly timid at first. He was described by the folks in Florida as "not brave but not a spooky boy"--I think that describes him perfectly. It took him a while to feel comfortable but when he did, he walked nicely on leash with us and the other dogs. He does look to the other greys for direction.  David is 3 years old and cat tolerant with supervision.
Foster Update 11/1/2015

David has been with our family for a month now.  All of his fine qualities have only gotten better since my last update three weeks ago.  David continues to walk nicely on the leash—I do not have a fenced yard so he has had lots of time on the leash.  With new people, he is reserved initially and then after a minute or so will slowly approach for pets and loves.  He does not like the crate, and I packed that away after week 1.  David does not need it while I am at work—he snoozes, plays with toys and snoozes some more during the work day.  He enjoys playing with toys and will empty the toy basket.  Oh, and he loves to kill the squeakers inside the toys!  He will let you take toys from his mouth easily.  David loves hanging out with his foster Greyhound sister, Gigi, but it seems that more and more, he will follow after me in the house and stay by my side instead.  David is cat friendly, although sometimes does have a bit of curiosity about the cat (especially when the cat is jumping and running—I think David wants to play too!)—times like this David can be verbally directed away from the cat.  David would be happiest in a home with another Grey.

 Foster Update 10/11/15
When I saw David at the Adoption Day last weekend, I knew in my heart that my foster home would be the right training ground to ease this beautiful three year old into retirement.  Our family consists of me (his foster mom), my husband, Gigi (a 4 ½ year old Greyhound), a cat, and two birds.  We live in a home without a fenced yard and leash-walking is our way of life.

David has been a pleasure!  He is a perfect student.  I have never seen a Grey so intently observant—carefully taking in all the goings-on in our house.  He immediately got on board with our routine benefiting from having Gigi lead the way.  He looked to her for the lead in everything, right down to pottying, for example, the first five days he would only pee where Gigi had gone and only sniff where she was sniffing.  The past three days, has revealed a new David!  David will now pee where he chooses (always outside, I should note!) and enjoys sniffing wherever his nose leads him!  His confidence is growing by leaps and bounds.

On leash, David walks nicely although at times he does need a firm hand to keep him in stride and moving along.  He is not fazed by deer or squirrels or passing dogs.  When we pass neighbors, he will either slowly walk up to them for pets or wait a minute while I chat and then approach for a pet.  It is a very pleasant interaction and makes for a nice walk.

David is crated during the day when I am at work.  At lunchtime he gets a potty, walk and companionship break and then is re-crated for the afternoon.  I have a spy camera on him and the first three days were difficult for him (and me!)—he was restless and vocal in the crate.  With each passing day, he became more at ease with the crating routine.  He learned my timing and understands that he will get out at lunch and after work.  I think his learning my schedule, and knowing what to expect eased his anxiety.  He chooses to not go in his open crate when I am home—I know some dogs like their crate as a den, David does not!

David sleeps through the night on a bed on the floor next to me without a single peep.  He has never once gotten up in the middle of the night to go “out.”

David is an expert on the stairs.  This was not always the case.  He was not happy about his “stair” lessons, in fact he resisted every step as I directed his paws and nudged (more accurately I should say, pushed) his rump!  After three days, he became expert—going up and down the long flight of stairs to our second floor with confidence.  It seemed once he overcame the stair demon, his confidence soared with everything else.  I am so incredibly proud of him.

David is a fabulous eater and cleans his bowl within minutes. He also readily takes treats from my hand—initially, he would not.

He is easy-going and lets me poke and prod him all over without complaint!  He loves massages, belly rubs and snuggles.  I trimmed David’s nails twice.  Both times he did not mind at all.  He relaxed on his bed while I clipped away.

David observes Gigi playing with toys and afterwards will pick up a toy to nibble and shake, but has not become toy crazed (just yet).  Right now he reminds me of how my first Grey was with toys—could take ‘em or leave ‘em!

David prefers to be in a room with me and will follow me from room to room—leaving Gigi behind.  Gigi is an independent girl and does not always follow me—she is happy having alone time!  David will sit for hours on the floor in my office while I type away.  He is a great companion.

It has been pure joy watching David become more and more independent.  I cannot believe how much he has learned and evolved in just one week—it brings tears to my eyes!  His sweetness and gentleness are beyond compare.

David likes to follow the pack! He would be happiest living in a home with another grey, so if you are loking for a second, third or fouth greyhound to add to your family, David would be a perfect pick!!
