About JS Shark Byte

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Color: Black

JS Shark Byte (not the best name but cute right after Shark Week), is a very handsome boy.  He's very friendly, happy and likes to lean up against whomever is close to him.  Shark broke his leg while racing and it was repaired in Florida.  His leg is healed and he's ready to begin his new life.  Shark just turned 6 years old in October and he iscat tolerant with supervision.
Foster Update 12/4/2013

While our family loves all Greyhounds, once in a while, a foster comes into our home that we find extraordinarily special - JS Shark Byte (Shark) is one of those hounds. This boy is a champion, having had a racing career that spanned an incredible five years, competing in an astounding 161 races.  In May, 2013, his last race tragically ended in a broken leg; Shark spent time recovering in GFNJ's award-winning Prison Program under the loving care of a kind inmate.  Fully healed, Shark transitioned to foster care with our family.

Physically, he is a very large Greyhound - he is a tall, 31" from foot to head - and also has a long body.  He has a rich, black coat with white at the very tip of his tail and on his feet.  His eyes are a dark brown and, when looked into, bring an immediate feeling of calm and peace.

Shark has been a perfect gentleman in our home, having no accidents in the house. He walks nicely on a leash and plays well with our hounds in our fenced yard. During the day, Shark is crated while we are at work; he likes his crate and, even when we're home, sometimes lounges in it (we leave the crate door open when we are home so he can come and go at his leisure).  At night, he sleeps soundly on a dog bed next to our bed and has shown no aggression about his space.  Shark eats well and has shown no food aggression.

Our home has 2 dog-friendly children, ages 8 and 12; Shark is very good with them - he is not pushy or overwhelming, even with his large size. Our home includes 3 cats, plus a foster kitten.  Two of our cats are extremely active and bold. He has shown no interest in the cats or kitten. In fact, he is afraid of them and does his best to ignore them.

Shark walks perfectly on our wood, tile and laminate floors.  Where he needs help is on stairs. We help him get up, lifting one foot at a time to the corresponding stair.  However, down is so far a major challenge. Luckily, one of the two adults in our home is strong enough to carry him down every morning. With time, we expect Shark to overcome his fear of stairs and to master them. We will continue working with him on stairs.

We recommend that Shark be adopted into a home with at least one other calm dog. He seeks out companionship; he craves the company of others, be it a person or a dog. He is especially interested in being with our more calm Greyhound, though he likes our "goofy" hound, too.

Shark is a wonderful Greyhound. He will be a loyal, loving friend to his future adopter. He will fill a home with love, peace and smiles. Truly, he is a very special, mushy boy that has overcome a tragic injury and an unusually long career on the dog track. Shark has more than earned his way to deserving the love of a person to call his very own.
Foster Update 12/10/2013
Shark Byte has conquered the stairs - both up and down! We are so proud of him.  We're convinced that there is no no challenge this determined, happy boy can't meet. He continues to be the perfect gentleman and house guest, with no accidents in the house. He has been eating well and continues to do well while in his crate while we are at work.  He is eager to please and a big, giant mush of a boy.

 Prison Inmate Foster Update  9/10/2013

"Shark is a helathy and well built dog.  However, he has had issues with his right back leg that has been treated.  Other than that he is a calm and stressfree friend to be around.  At first he may tend to be a little shy and not eat; but after about several days he'll open up.  Shark does well with going to the bathroom.  He's go at 6:45 am, 12:15pm and 9:00pm!!  Feeding time being 6:30am and 4:20pm.  Shark will sleep all night along with you on the floor. If you do take Shark please take good care of my friend and I'll tell him to do the same.  Thank You."
Prison Inmate Foster Update  9/10/2013

"Shark Byte has been a trooper!  He's had a broken leg and got bit by another crazy dog and has recovered very well.  Since his cast has been removed from his leg he has been walking on it pretty well already.  He is a good dog that doesn't pee or poop where he shouldn't.  All and all he is a great dog."
