Adoption PendingHarry Honey is a gorgeous boy but he doesn't know it yet. He is somewhat socially challenged but he tried to enjoy himself. He was frightened by new noises but again, he tried to adjust. Once he is in a home with other greyhounds and has a routine and people who he can trust, he will develop into a very loyal companion--maybe never a social butterfly but comfortable. Harry just turned 4 in August. He is the brother to siblings who were previously took and who are adopted--Honey Child and King Honey--how nice to be able to take siblings. Cat tolerant with supervision.
Foster Update 9/7/2009:I think Harry is a shy boy, but also a very BRAVE boy. He has never had the opportunity to learn to trust, but he wants a connection with you so badly that he gathers all his courage and he TRIES. It is very touching to see how hard this gorgeous little boy tries.
Two years ago GFNJ was able to rescue Harry's full brother and sister, but Harry has waited all this time. I fostered Harry's brother, so when I heard GFNJ had Harry, I was very glad to foster him. In the short week I have had him, he's come such a long way. Now when I come home I get wiggles and tail wagging, and adorable yodel that ends in a sort of moan. Although he can't always come all the way to my hand (since outstretched hands worry Harry at this stage of his life), he comes to my side now to be pet more and more frequently. And once you start to pet him, oh how he loves it. He will lean into me, and if I move back a little, he takes another step forward, not wanting that wonderful feeling to end. Sometimes he will approach my bed and sniff me when he thinks I'm asleep, clearly wanting to know me better when he thinks it is "safe," and the last two mornings he gets very animated when he knows I am awake and "talks" to me and bounces around and puts his front half up on the bed by me, and I rub him all over, and he loves it. Each day I see more and more his willingness to come forward and be loved and I am so proud of him for that.
I've also discovered that Harry "plays in private." In the early morning just before daylight, I will hear Harry in the bedroom tossing stuffies around for all he is worth! But he won't let you see him play yet, because Harry doesn't know he is allowed to play, but one day he will.
Harry walks beautifully and politely on a leash, but lots of commotion, dogs that bark at him or bicycles, or too many children, scare him. Harry has spent time with other breed dogs and is fine with them, but he will make the best progress with another confident greyhound to follow, and ideally a fenced yard so his walks with you are purely for pleasure and relaxation.
Harry is a naturally clean dog, and housebreaking has been very simple and he doesn't try to counter surf or misbehave. I think it is extra-important that Harry knows he is a GOOD BOY, so calmness and routine, and letting him proceed at his own pace so you don't ask more of him than he can give, helps him to understand and learn to trust and adjust. And of course loving him is absolutely a no-brainer, because Harry is extremely loveable - he just doesn't know it yet. Harry will probably never be a "craft fair dog" or a meet & greet dog, but he CAN be your very special heart dog.
I know this foster update was a little bit long, but truly, Harry is so worth it! I just can't say enough about this dog who tries his heart out. Harry will be at the GFNJ picnic on leash with his foster mom, since that will give him a bit more courage at such a busy event and is more fair to Harry.
